Oregon Bowling Tournaments

There’s a whole lot of bowling tournaments going on around the state at any given time.

In addition to the Oregon USBC run tournaments there are also a variety of tournament clubs and amateur bowling tours, as well as a bunch of stand alone Swiss tournaments, all happening regularly year-in and year-out.

You’ll have to check out the local tours periodically for updates to their tournament schedules including squad times and event formats around the state but I’ve tried to provide this quick summary of events occurring throughout Oregon this year.

Bowling Tours & Tournament Clubs Around of Oregon

These are the main bowling tours, and clubs that put on regular events throughout the state. If you know of any others please contact me to let me know about them.

#1 – Oregon Bowlers Association (OBA)

The OBA is a scratch bowling tournament organization that holds tournaments roughly once a month throughout the year in northern Oregon and southern Washington, although most events are held in the Portland Metro area.

Events typically occur on the second weekend of each month spanning August through April with a Grand Finals event (invitation only) scheduled every year in May.

Bowlers participating these tournaments receive points for their performances throughout the season. The final points list is then used to seed bowlers into the invitational finals event held annually in May.

Most OBA events are held on challenging conditions and are bowled by some of the best and most competitive bowlers in the region.

In terms of the quality of competitors this tour is just a step down from the regional PBA tour.

#2 – The Southern Oregon Bowling Association (SOBA)

This is a scratch bowling tour that is similar to the OBA featured above.

This tour competes on a mixture of recreational, modified-house, and challenge patterns throughout the season.

There are usually 8 tour stops annually spanning August through March with a Grand Finals invitational event held in April every year.

The SOBA generally serves up competitive tournaments for bowlers coming from a much wider geographical area. Bowlers frequently come from Southern, Coastal, & Central Oregon as well as Northern California and host bowling centers are scattered around southern Oregon.

There are no hard rules about tournament conditions but typically a third of the events are bowled on challenge or sport conditions while the others are bowled on modified house shots or recreational oil patterns.

Bowlers win points throughout the season to seed themselves into a Grand Finals tournament at the end of the year in the Spring much like the OBA.

#3 – The Portland Area 7-Gamers

These are a series of largely unaffiliated scratch tournaments in and around the Portland metro area.

These tournaments are a compliment to the OBA in that they are usually scheduled the first weekend of the month to allow bowlers to bowl in both event each month if they want to.

These events are different from the OBA and SOBA in that their is no season long points list – each tournament is a stand alone event.

There is no membership fee for participation and there is no invitational-only finals event.

Most events on the 7-Gamer tour occur in the Portland Metro area and are bowled on Kegel Challenge patterns.

The tournament director of the the Portland Area 7-Gamers is Rebecca Cole, who is also the current director for the OBA. The tour schedule is regularly posted on Facebook in the NorthWest Bowlers Facebook Group.

#4 – The Northwest Senior Tour (NST)

This is scratch tournament bowling for seniors only, hosted primarily in Northern Oregon and Washington. Men must be at least 50 and women must be at least 40 to participate.

Much like the OBA and the SOBA, the NST is a tour where senior bowlers generate points throughout the season based on their performances on a month to month basis.

The NST typically has about 14 regular events from August through May and then a finals event in mid-to late May every year.

#5 – The PBA Western & Northwestern Regional Tours (Professional Bowlers Association)

The PBA, PBA Regionals, PBA50, PBA60, and the PWBA periodically host tournaments all across the West Coast and western inland states.

Most events are hosted in California, Nevada, and Washington but a few times a year the regional tours stop on various centers throughout the state of Oregon.

You don’t have to be a PBA member to compete in these events but you can’t cash more than a couple times in regular regional PBA events without joining.

Entry fees for non-PBA members are somewhat steep but the level of competition found in these events is very high which makes them fun events to test yourself in.

Usually there will be 2-3 events each year located in and around Oregon state from Portland all the way down to Klamath Falls. Grants Pass is a regular stop on the regional tour which is usually held in March.

The regional director for these events is Gary Mage.

Here are a few more regional bowling tours and clubs that serve bowlers of all ages and genders throughout Oregon state.

1. Revolutionary Tournament Bowling – Portland (RTB Portland)

2. Hanscam’s Match Club
   This is a local tournament club that travels around the nearby area.
3. Oregon State 600 Club
   Another local bowlers club similar to the Hanscam’s Match Club.
4. Oregon Junior Classic Tournament Association
   This is a tournament series for Oregon state junior bowlers that has been around since the 70’s. They currently hold 9-tournaments every year plus one finals event and one additional Youth/Adult doubles held in August.
5. The Bowling By Invitation Tour (BBI)
   This is a semi-senior handicap bowlers tour that holds roughly 10 stops a year in Oregon and Washington state. Bowlers 39 and up are invited. Finals are held in December.
6. The Junior Bowlers Tour (JBT)
   The JBT is a national tour of the best youth bowlers. They travel everywhere and occasionally have a stop in Oregon where non-members can shoe up.

Annual Oregon State Bowling Tournaments

There are also a bunch of regular and semi-regular events that happen every year. The most notable of these are the State USBC events which are all listed on the OSUSBC website: http://osusbc.webs.com/tournaments.htm

The USBC isn’t the only group however. The Oregon State Bowling Proprietor’s Association (OSBPA) puts on a few regular events each year as well.

#1 – Oregon State USBC Events

Annual Oregon State USBC tournaments are typically scheduled a year in advance.

For the 2018-2019 bowling year the Oregon State USBC tournament schedule includes the following events in order of their occurrence.

The Senior Qualifying Championship
October 20-21 and 27-28, 2018 – Orchard Lanes, Hood River

The Oregon state senior qualifying championship tournament is for seniors in the state.

The Queens Championship Tournament
January 26-27, 2019 – Silver Creek Lanes, Silverton

This is the premiere ladies tournament presented by the Oregon state USBC.

The High School District Championships
January 12 through January 27, 2019 – Various Bowling Centers

The High School State Championships
February 22-24, 2019 – AMF Firebird Lanes, Salem

Pepsi Youth Sectional Championships
March 2-3, 2019
Hosted this year at:

• Oregon Trail Lanes, St. Helens
• Firs Bowl, Eugene
• Roxy Ann Lanes, Medford
• Lava Lanes, Bend

The Pepsi Youth tournaments are nationally sponsored scratch events by Pepsi. They are scheduled on a state-by-state basis.

In this sectional tournament the main format is singles/scratch (in multiple divisions) but the OSUSBC has stepped up this year to offer optional singles/handicap entries as well.

These sectional events have their own prize funds that pay out into bowlers individual scholarship accounts but they also serve as qualifier tournaments for the Pepsi State Championship tournament held later in the Spring.

The High School All Star Championships
March 9-10, 2019 – North Bend Lanes, North Bend

The OSUSBC Youth Championships
March 23-24 and March 30-31, 2019 – Muggly’s, Toledo

Unlike the scratch Pepsi Youth Tournaments the Oregon state USBC Youth Championships are handicap events with different divisions based on the bowlers age.

The Pepsi Youth State Championships
April 6-7, 2019 – Emerald Lanes, Eugene

To bowl in this tournament youths will have had to bowl in the Pepsi youth sectional events which held earlier in the year. Those who qualified in the sectionals were invited to enter this event at that time.

The Pepsi State Championship tournament is a singles only competition with only scratch divisions. The winners of each division in this event are rewarded with entries into the National Junior Gold Championship held in Detroit, MI in mid July.

The Oregon State USBC Open Championships
April 6 through May 26, 2019 – Epicenter, Klamath Falls

The Oregon State Women’s Championships
April 26 through May 26, 2019 – AMF Firebird, Salem

The Senior Mixed Championships
July 12-14, 2019 – Tillamook Lanes, Tillamook

The Oregon State Jamboree Fun Charity Tournament
July 26, 2019 – Muggly’s, Toledo

In addition to the USBC state tournaments listed above the Summer Oregon State Jamboree Fun Tournament is typically help in late July every year just before the state USBC annual meeting. The 2019 annual meeting is scheduled for the following days, July 27-28.

#2 – OSBPA Bowling Tournaments

Regular Oregon State Bowling Proprietor’s tournaments include the following:

The Oregon Grand Prix Youth Scholarship Tournament – This even is held annually in November for youth Grand Prix Members. Grand Prix tournaments typically offer low entry fees and generous payouts in the form of scholarships. Kids of all ages (under 20) may be members in the Grand Prix program.

The Annual Center Challenge Tournament – Bowling centers from around the state send their top bowlers to compete. The most recent year was hosted in April at TenDown Bowling & Entertainment center in Roseburg OR.

The Annual Bowl Down Cancer Tournament – Held in late May most recently at Silver Creek Lanes, Silverton OR.

One-Off Swiss Tournaments & Sweepers Throughout the State

Swiss tournaments are a ton of fun. They typically are not part of any tournament series or club meaning that bowling in them does not commit the bowler to a series or schedule. Many tournament clubs reserve some monies for distribution at season end at a finals event. Swiss events are different and preferable to many bowlers.

Here are some of the regular or semi-regular Swiss events and/or sweepers that happen in and around the state from cities like Portland, Eugene, Bend, and Klamath Falls just to name a few.

• The Bend Baker Tournament is a mixed team of 5 that typically falls in early July. It’s run by the same guys that do the Lava Lanes Swiss.
• The Emerald Lanes Swiss is another mixed team of five event that typically falls in late July.
• The Lava Lanes Swiss is a mixed team even that typically falls in early June.
• Rainbow Lanes in Forest Grove, OR holds a monthly Swiss tournament. Contact Rainbow lanes for more info on their schedule.
• The T&C Swiss happens at Town & Country Lanes in Keizer OR annually. (monthly)
• The Mt Hood Lanes Swiss at Mt Hood Lanes in Gresham OR (late October)
• The Willamette Valley Baker Tournament held in Silverton, OR (semi-monthly)
